Yes,you should consider directly connecting your radio. Through a FM Direct adapter or AUX-IN adapter.

Assuming that you put an FM direct adapter in each car, you will keep the same portability. The unit will still slide into the dock the same, it's just another wire needs to be placed from the dock to you car stereo's antenna.

There are ways to get around this. I am going to write a detailed post directed towards your specific problem and you should find it very useful. If you have any questions give us a call here and we can further explain. Thanks for Reading!

Regarding the replacement of an old Sportster Replay with a newer unit that is compatible with all the old Sporter docks, etc you mention that the new units apparently have a weaker FM transmitter and I should consider a direct FM connection to my vehicle.
IS THIS Necessary?
Transportability from vehicle (dock) to vehicle (dock) is VERY IMPORTANT, I regularly drive 3 to sometimes 5 different vehicles and like the portability of my unit. When I inevitably upgrade my unit will I still have the same portability of taking my unit from vehicle to vehicle and not experiencing problems without hardwiring each dock to each individual vehicle? I would find that troublesome and impractical. Any info in this regard would be appreciated. thank you.
