Hardwiring a Plug and Play Radio

Thursday, June 7th, 2012
Share Button

A lot of people want to hardwire their Plug and Play Radio. When they tell us that we need to clarify whether they want to hardwire the power (so that there is no need for a cigarette lighter plug) or if they simply want a direct audio connection providing crystal clear sound. We have options for both. But if you have the right vehicle we can provide an all in one solution that is perfect.

We are closing out what we call the “XM5” Aux Input Adapters from PIE. PIE made these years ago to initially support the newer 5 Volt Based XM Plug and Play Radios which is why they are called “XM5 Interfaces.” The XM5 Interfaces connect behind your factory car radio and provide a direct audio and power connection for 5 Volt Sirius and XM Radios. If your Sirius Xm Radio is a Power Connect Radio you will also need this additional plug.

Installation of the XM5 Interface is easy. The hardest part is simply getting behind the radio. If you are comfortable doing that it’s something you can install yourself. Otherwise look for a local car stereo shop. We suggest using Yelp reviews for that.

Here is the best thing about the XM5 Interfaces…they are on closeout for only $29.99. That’s less than half of their original retail price. So they are priced to move. You just have to check to see if your vehicle is compatible. Just look below for your vehicle and be sure to read the product description and compatibility notes.

If your vehicle isn’t compatible or the XM5 Interface is out of stock the next best option would be to hardwire the power with our Power Hardwire Kit and provide an audio connection with the FM Direct Adapter (just make sure your Plug and Play Car Cradle has an FM Output)

Sirius XM Satellite Radio Repairs from TSS-Radio

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012
Share Button

One of the unique things we are able to do at TSS Radio is repair some common problems with your Sirius XM Satellite Radio. It’s a service we began offering about 3 years ago and we have had a great success record.

Droo not only helps our TSS-Radio customers through email, but he also does the vast majority of our repair work from his workshop in Maine. Pretty far from our warehouse in Chicago!

So if you have a Sirius or XM Radio that needs a repair, you can contact Droo via email at sales@tss-radio.com. Let him know what model of radio you have and what issues you are experiencing. Droo will get back with you and let you know if he is able to fix your radio. He’ll give you a quote and an address where you can send the radio. The repair itself may take a few days or a week to fix and he will then promptly send the radio back to you via US Priority Mail.

After it’s fixed, the issue is guaranteed for 6 months. Twice as long as the factory warranty on new radios!

Common repairs Droo performs are listed below:

  • Repairing dock connectors on the Universal Sirius Radios, such as the

-Screen replacement for the Sirius XM Mirge, the XM Xpress RC and the XM Xpress RCi. If the backlight of your radio screen went dull this is what you will need.

-Replacing the Dials on XM XMP3s and XMP3is.

-Repairing the Stiletto 2 Internal Antenna. Sometimes people will drop their Stiletto 2 too many times and the internal antenna within it will no longer work. This will fix it so you are once again able to get reception in the portable mode.

-Repairing the Power and Antenna Connections on Starmate Replays (Model ST2).

Unfortunately we no longer have parts or tuners to repair older Sirius Sportsters and Sportster Replay Radios. Since these radios were discontinued more than 6 years ago we don’t have access to the parts. We would highly suggest upgrading to a newer model radio like the Sirius Starmate 8 or a SiriusXM Edge and starting over with new Home Kits or Boomboxes or Car Kits if you need them. If you end up moving to the SiriusXM Edge then you will be able to access the 20+ Xtra Channels that are now available on that receiver.

So if you need a repair on your Satellite Radio please reach out to us via email so we can help you get back to listening to SiriusXM.

XM Antenna Buying Guide

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011
Share Button

When choosing an antenna for your XM radio, you may be confused about the different models and what is best for your setup. This short guide will go over some of the common XM antenna models and help you figure out what you need.

Vehicle Antennas

Mini XM Car Antenna

The Mini XM Car Antenna is the smallest satellite radio antenna on the market. At around 1 square inch, it is probably the most unobtrusive antenna you’ll find. High gain and  a 20ft. antenna cable make this antenna a great solution for customers looking for a small and strong antenna. Works with any single-input XM radio.

XM Car Antenna

XM Car AntennaThe XM Car Antenna is included with most XM Plug and Play Radio models. It is a low profile, high gain antenna that works with all single-input XM radios. It features rubber feet on the bottom to protect your vehicle’s finish and has a 23 ft. attached cable that can easily routed under interior molding for a clean look.

Browning Magnetic Car Antenna for XM

This antenna from Browning features a slightly thicker cable that tends to be more durable than some of the XM branded antennas. It has the same high gain and 20ft. cable, and utilizes the standard SMB connection, making it compatible and ideal for any single input XM radio. It also includes an adhesive pad for customers who would like a more permanent mounting solution.

XMicro XM Magnetic Vehicle Antenna

The XMicro is a versatile antenna that can be used with older FAKRA style XM Radios or standard, single input SMB antenna connections. It features a low profile, 23 ft. cable, magnetic base, and rubber feet to protect your vehicle’s finish. It’s a great option for customers who currently have an older radio, but who may be considering upgrading.

XM Home Antennas

XM Home Antenna

The XM Home Antenna is the most common type of XM antenna for home use. It is included with all current XM boomboxes and home kits, and is sold separately as a replacement. This antenna has a 20ft. cable and can be easily mounted indoor or outdoor for use. Compatible with most XM single input docking stations or radios.

Terk XM Outdoor Home Antenna XM6

The Terk XM6 is a weather resistant, high performance outdoor antenna for use with most XM Radios. The XM6 uses standard RG6 coaxial cable for extra durability and longer cable runs (can drive up to 100ft.) It includes a F to SMB adapter cable to plug into any standard single input XM docking station or boombox.

Pixel Technologies Pro-500 or Pro-600

The Pixel Pro-500 and Pro-600 are professional grade antennas that work with both Sirius and XM satellite radios. Featuring 12 and 8.5 dBi Gain (respectively) these Pixel antennas are the strongest on the market. Both antennas utilize standard RG6 coaxial cable and include F to SMB adapter cables to plug into your satellite radio. In addition, both antennas can drive up to 200ft. of cable without any additional external amplifiers.

Credit vs. Debit Card When Shopping Online

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011
Share Button

When shopping online many people are unsure whether or not they should use a traditional credit card or their debit/bank card. Although debit cards can be easily used to make online purchases, there are some things customers should know about the way they work. Here are a few advantages, disadvantages, and differences between using a debit and credit card when shopping online.

What are the differences between credit and debit cards?

A credit card is an independent credit line that is not associated with your banking account and is subject to interest charges. Even though your debit card has a Visa or Mastercard logo, it does not function like a traditional credit card. Debit cards never accrue interest because the funds are taken directly out of the available balance in your banking account.

Advantages/disadvantages

Credit card advantages:

Safer for online shopping – Credit cards often offer more protection from fraudulent charges or provide more recourse if fraudulent charges are made. If you see an authorized transaction, a seller doesn’t ship your product, etc., you can dispute the credit card transaction. If someone obtains your debit card, you will often get the funds restored to your account, but you will most likely have to wait a much longer time.

Extended warranty programs – Many credit card companies offer extended warranties on products you purchase using their credit cards.

Rewards cards – Most major credit card companies offer several types of rewards cards. This means when you use your credit card you gain points you can use toward flights, free gifts and more. These types of programs are not available on most debit cards.

Credit card disadvantages:

Interest charges – Every purchase you make using a traditional credit card is subject to interest charges. This can make you end up paying much more for a product than if you were to have just paid for it outright.

Fees – If you fail to pay your traditional credit card bill on time you will be subject to a late fee. Many cards also have annual fees.

Debit card advantages:

No interest – Since funds come directly out of your banking account you are never charged interest on a debit card transaction. Interest charges associated with traditional credit cards can often mean you end up paying way more for a product if you do not pay off the balance right away.

Can’t spend money you don’t have – Many customers like to use debit cards so they avoid future debt. If you do not have money available in your bank account, a debit card transaction will be declined, where as a credit card will allow you to spend above your current means.

Debit card disadvantages:

Holds - Every time you attempt a transaction with a debit card there is a hold for that amount placed on your bank account. That means, even if the transaction is declined due to an address mismatch, numbers entered incorrectly, etc., the amount you were attempting to purchase will not be available to you until several days later. This can cause a big headache if you keep attempting the transaction with a debit card. For instance, if you are attempting to pay for a $50 item with a debit card and it’s declined, each decline will take away another $50 from your available balance. That means 3 declined transactions at $50 each will make $150 not available to you for several business days. These holds can also result in overdraft fees.

Less online shopping protections - If you use your debit card for an online transaction with a dishonest person or company there is much less recourse you can take to get your money back. Traditional credit cards offer many more protections against fraudulent transactions.

Hopefully we’ve been able to clear up some common questions regarding credit and debit cards. If you have specific questions about a past, potential, or an attempted purchase with TSS-Radio, please contact us at sales@tss-radio.com or call 773.772.4340.

TSS Radio Shipping Times

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011
Share Button

People often ask us at TSS-Radio.com how long it will take for an order to arrive. Since we offer several different shipping options the answer to that question depends on which option you choose. Here are the shipping options we offer and the general shipping time frames.

TSS-Radio Free Shipping (any purchase over $70 qualifies for free shipping)

Free shipping ships out from Chicago via UPS Ground. UPS Ground can take anywhere from 1-5 business days depending on where you are located within the United States. Check out the UPS service map below.

We also offer UPS expedited shipping options. We offer Next Business Day Air, 2nd Business Day Air, and 3rd Day Select. UPS does not offer weekend delivery, so please factor in lag time if ordering late in the week.

USPS Postal Priority Mail

Our most common shipping option is USPS Postal Priority Mail. Priority Mail generally takes 2-3 business days, but can often be a few days longer depending on where you are located or during heavy volume times of year. Postal Priority is an affordable, quick option for small items. Postal Priority also ships out Monday-Saturday, so if you are ordering late in the week, it is a quicker option in many cases.

UPS Mail Innovations

UPS Mail Innovations is a hybrid service between UPS and the United States Postal Service. Packages shipped by Mail Innovations leave TSS-Radio via UPS, travel to a nearby location to the destination address, and are transferred to/delivered by the Post Office. Although this option is very inexpensive, it also has the longest wait time. Packages shipped by Mail Innovations generally take 7-10 business days to arrive, but can take up to 2 weeks depending on your location. Mail Innovations is a great, inexpensive option for customers who want to pay the least amount possible for shipping but who are not in a hurry to receive their item.

Canadian Shipping Options

We offer a few different shipping options to our Canadian customers. The quickest option is UPS Worldwide Expedited. Worldwide Expedited packages generally only take about 2-3 business days to arrive. We also offer options from the United States Postal Service. Express Mail International typically takes 3-5 business days where as Priority Mail International can often take 2-3 weeks.

General Shipping Policies

  • Most orders placed before 5PM Central Time Monday – Friday will ship out from our Chicago warehouse the same day.
  • USPS Priority Mail orders placed after 5PM on Friday will often leave the warehouse Saturday.
  • UPS does NOT pick up or deliver on Saturdays/Sundays. If you are ordering late in the week, USPS may be a quicker option
  • UPS Next Day Air orders placed on Fridays will arrive the following Monday.
  • UPS 2nd Day Air orders placed on Thursdays will also arrive the following Monday.
  • UPS 3rd Day Select orders placed on Wednesdays will, again, arrive the following Monday.
  • Canadian orders are subject to Canadian import taxes and fees. These are charged upon delivery and are NOT included in the shipping charges you pay to TSS-Radio.com
  • TSS-Radio will NOT mark any Canadian package as a gift to avoid tariffs.

If you have questions regarding when your order will ship out, estimated delivery times, special requests, or any other questions please contact us at sales@tss-radio.com or call 773.772.4340.

Switching To XM: Why Now May Be the Time

Thursday, April 7th, 2011
Share Button

Since SIRIUS and XM Radio merged a little while back there has been some confusion about the lingering differences between the SIRIUS and XM hardware and subscriptions. As we’ve mentioned before, the merged company, Sirius XM, has discontinued some popular Sirius radio models and have continued to merge the channel lineups to create a more streamlined product line and service. With these changes some subscribers have been asking us at TSS-Radio.com whether or not they should purchase a XM radio when it’s time to upgrade. In short, the answer is Yes. Current XM radios present the most features and programming options for the Satellite Radio customer. Here are some explanations of XM hardware and service and the future of SIRIUS Radio to help you decide which radio is right for you.

  • XM Radios provide the most flexible combination of features and programming. What that means is, a XM Radio is capable of carrying more channels than any current SIRIUS model – so you’ll always be able to get more content with a XM receiver. For example, every MLB game is available on XM with a standard subscription package, but MLB play-by-play isn’t available at all on SIRIUS radios, even with the “Best of XM” package.
  • Although XM receivers are the future of Satellite Radio, some SIRIUS models will continue to be produced and available as we move forward, but availability may be limited. TSS-Radio should still be able to carry radios like the SIRIUS Starmate 5, the SCC1 vehicle tuner and the SR-H2000 home tuner for some time. However, if you are insistent on having a SIRIUS-branded radio, it is best to act fast on purchasing it, as some models will not be available after the current stock is depleted.
  • Don’t worry about SIRIUS going away. IT’S NOT. In fact, SIRIUS is launching a new satellite in 2011 and will continue producing in-dash radios for the auto industry. Many vehicles will still have SIRIUS as a factory option (rather than XM) and if you have a SIRIUS radio currently, you will be able to continue using it. These changes will not effect service on any SIRIUS radio that you may currently have or buy.

Since Sirius XM is continuing to produce XM branded radios, there are several options depending on the features, use and price you are looking for. To put the available models in terms of the SIRIUS radios you may be familiar with, here is a quick comparison of models and features:

(Red text denotes feature exclusive to that SIRIUS model, Green text denotes feature exclusive to that XM model)

Now that we’ve covered the differences between SIRIUS and XM branded hardware, here are a few notes on subscriptions. First of all, we are a separate, independent company and don’t have all of the fine details on subscriptions but in our opinion a XM subscription with the Best of SIRIUS package offers Satellite Radio customers the most programming at the best value. For $16.99 per month (+ taxes & fees) XM subscribers get every MLB game, every NFL game (home team broadcasts only), every NASCAR event, NBA, NHL, PGA, as well as premium talk content like Howard Stern, Oprah Radio, Martha Stewart Living Radio, Playboy Radio, and more! In addition, customers subscribing to the XM also have access to the Sirius XM smartphone app and Sirius XM Internet Radio for only $2.99 more per month. Having the XM Everything plus the Best of SIRIUS package with Internet Listening gives you practically everything Sirius XM has to offer and provides flexible listening options all for less than $20 per month (before taxes & fees).

For more information on subscriptions please visit www.siriusxm.com.

We hope at TSS-Radio.com that we’ve been able to clear up some of the confusion surrounding XM subscriptions and hardware. If you are a current SIRIUS customer and are looking to upgrade your radio switching to XM is a great option. Also, if you are new to XM there is currently a $30 Mail-In Rebate available on all new XM radios. With the MLB season getting underway and $30 back (Plus FREE ‘Best Of’ and Internet Listening), there’s never been a better time to switch!

If you have questions about XM radios, accessories, or basic subscription questions, please contact us at sales@tss-radio.com or call 773.772.4340. For detailed subscription questions or questions about your existing Sirius or XM subscription, please contact Sirius XM at www.siriusxm.com or 1-866-635-2349.

Troubleshooting Your Sirius XM Plug & Play Receiver

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011
Share Button

If you’ve owned a satellite radio long enough, you’ve probably encountered one of the common issues that occur. It’s likely you’ve seen ‘Antenna Not Detected’, ‘Acquiring Signal’, or have had your radio not power on. However, these common satellite radio issues can often be fixed by replacing inexpensive parts.

Here is a troubleshooting guide for these common satellite radio problems.
Problem: Antenna Not Detected, No Antenna, Check Antenna

What’s happening: Antenna Not Detected occurs when the antenna is no longer transmitting to the antenna port on the dock or radio. This can happen if the antenna wire is kinked, if the magnetic base of the antenna has gotten moisture inside of it, or it’s been otherwise damaged or has just gotten old.

Troubleshooting: Try plugging in a different antenna into the radio or docking station you are having a problem with. Since home & car docks use the same antenna connection,  you can test a boombox antenna with a car dock or vice versa.

Solution: Replace the antenna. You can find a vehicle antenna HERE or a home/boombox antenna HERE.

Problem: Radio will not power on.

What’s happening: The radio isn’t receiving power from the power adapter. The power adapter may have a blown fuse, a short in the cable, or some other physical defect.

Troubleshooting: In rare cases radios will stop powering on and it will not be the power adapter. To test your radio try it in another docking station. If you get power in your car dock or boombox (or vice versa), you’ll know the problem is the power adapter.

Solution: Although it is sometimes possible to replace a fuse, it’s best to replace the whole power adapter to be certain you are correcting the problem and to avoid potentially damaging your receiver. Click HERE to find replacement Sirius power adapters, HERE for XM.

Problem: Acquiring Signal, No Signal

What’s happening: Acquiring Signal is one of the more complicated common issues. It happens when either your radio or docking station cannot acquire the signal from your antenna. In most cases Acquiring Signal is NOT a problem with the antenna, but rather the radio itself or docking station.

Troubleshooting: Try using your plug and play receiver in a different docking station (like a boombox or home dock) to see if that corrects the issue. Although unlikely a problem with the antenna, use a spare antenna to test as well. Test the radio by using different combinations of parts you know are working.

Solution: Replace the docking station or radio. Click HERE to search for Sirius replacement docks, HERE for XM. Click HERE to view Sirius replacement receivers, HERE for XM.

A Quick Guide to SIRIUS XM Mounting Options

Thursday, February 24th, 2011
Share Button

When installing a plug and play Sirius XM radio you may think you are limited to the vehicle mounting options included in the box, but you aren’t! There are actually several ways to mount your satellite radio to achieve a cleaner look, make it easier to use, or make it even more portable. Check out all of your options below!

Vehicle Specific Mounts

Ford Fusion 2010-2011 Custom Mount

A Vehicle Specific Mount is a forged piece of metal that is attached to existing bolts (located behind the molded dash parts in your vehicle) giving you a clean, factory like look. Vehicle Specific Mounts offer a great solution for customers who want to maintain a factory-like look in their car while retaining the portability and ease of use that comes along with a plug & play satellite radio. VSMs are available for a wide variety of vehicles, including semi-trucks and foreign cars that are often hard to find parts for.

To check out our selection of Vehicle Specific Mounts click HERE.

Vent Mounts

Sirius Universal Vent Mount

XM Vent Mount

———————————————————————————————————————————————————

A vent mount is an easy-to-install, unobtrusive option for installing your Sirius XM radio. The vent mount simply clips into the heat/air conditioning vent in your vehicle offering you access to your radio without blocking the view out of your windshield. The vent mount is small and easy to install or remove, making it a great option for customers who need to take their radio in and out of their vehicles regularly.

Visit our Universal Mounts section to find more information on Vent Mounts

Adhesive Mounts

Sirius Stratus 6 receiver & car kit being used with an adhesive mount

Adhesive mounts are another affordable and easy-to-install mounting option. Like the vent mount, the adhesive mount will not obstruct the view out of your windshield, but it also adds flexibility in mounting location. An adhesive mount can be applied to any clean, flat surface in your vehicle and will not damage your vehicle’s dash or interior if removed. It’s a great option for customers looking for a semi-permanent mounting solution.

Check out our Universal Mounts section to find the Sirius or XM Adhesive Mount that will work for you.

Suction Cup Mounts

Sirius Universal Suction Cup Mount

XM Suction Cup Mount

—————–

The mount Sirius XM customers are probably most familiar with are suction cup mounts. Suction cup mounts have been included with many of the most popular Sirius radios over the years and are a sturdy, easy to use mounting option. However, in some newer vehicle kits only the vent or adhesive mounts are included. Realizing that suction cup mounts work out well for many customers, we offer the option to purchase a suction cup mount for your Sirius or XM radio separately at TSS-Radio.com.

Suction Cup Mounts can be found in our Universal Mount Section. Click HERE to take a look at all of our options.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Portable Vehicle Kits

Sirius Universal Portable Vehicle Kit

Another option for installing your Sirius XM satellite radio is a Portable Vehicle Kit from TSS-Radio.com. We developed the portable vehicle kit for customers who are in need of an easy mounting option when moving their radio from vehicle to vehicle. These kits are an excellent option for local truck drivers who are constantly using different trucks, business travelers, or practically anyone else who needs to use their radio in different vehicles frequently. The Portable Vehicle Kits include a specially designed suction cup mount that has an attached metal plate for mounting your magnetic satellite radio antenna. This allows you to keep most of your components attached for quick and easy removal or installation.

Check out our Sirius or XM Vehicle Kit sections for more information on these kits, or click HERE to view the Suction Cup Mount with Antenna Pedestal separately. (Also available in a XM version HERE)

Mount Accessories

XM Mount Adapter - Required for using a XM Radio with a VSM

Swivel - Allows you to tilt the radio and provides clearance for cables when using a VSM

In addition to all of the mounting options you’ve read about, we also carry a wide array of mount accessories. Sometimes they are necessary to make a mounting option compatible, sometimes they just make things a little better. We also carry a variety of items that will allow you to use other devices (such as iPod, GPS systems, etc.) with Vehicle Specific Mounts.
